Work began back back in April on the field house and Memorial Gymnasium on the University of Maine campus in Orono, and considering that the buildings were built back in 1924, the renovations have gone smoothly, for the most part.
There have been a few surprises pop up, that have slowed down the project. Asbestous was found wrapped around pipes that were encased in concrete, and in the glazing of windows around the buildings. They also found more old flooring that contained mercury.
Then, there was the change being made to the size of the indoor track. New NCAA regulations limit the size of indoor tracks to less than 200 meters in length. The old track was 218 meters in length. To get within the new regulations, a set of steel girders is being moved. Once finished, the new track will be 190 meters in length.
Originally, the completion date for the first phase of the $15 million renovation was December 15th. Baring further delays or surprises, UMaine hope to have this project done by January 3rd of 2014.
