John Whaanga says South Auckland has a large Maori and Pasifika population which requires more health services and feels a greater impact from winter illnesses.

“We also have areas where there is quite a significant socio-economic disparity, so to ensure that we have an equitable system that can reach and provide services to everyone, we need to support especially those who are the more disadvantaged by the situation than we are now with winter illnesses,” he said.

Mr Whaanga says just 20 per cent of hospital admissions this week are for Covid while flu accounts for 50 per cent, putting huge pressure on services.
