Hagestad wins second US Mid-Am title, back in Masters | WGN 720 radio
SIASCONSET, Mass. (AP) Stewart Hagestad won his second US Mid-Amateur Championship on Friday, pushing Mark Costanza 2 and 1 downwind of Sankaty Head for a return to the Masters.
Hagestad, 30, from Newport Beach, Calif., Also won in 2016 at Stonewall, Elverson, Pa., Then was the bottom amateur of the 2017 Masters with a tie for 36th place. He also secured a berth next year at the US Open.
Hagestad was leading 5 on Thursday after the first 18 holes of the 36-hole match.
“(Costanza) hasn’t given me anything all day,” said Hagestad, a sophomore MBA student at the University of Southern California. “I thought that at some point maybe I would have a break or he would leave me a hole. I knew he would come out swinging. He’s a very good player. I tried to go out and get him to beat me, and he almost did.
Costanza, 32, is from Morristown, New Jersey.
“It’s tough because when you come out of a hole you want to birdies, but you know if you wobble you go deeper into the hole,” Costanza said. “We have to keep the momentum going. I think I kept the honor all day. I’ve done a few clutch ups and downs and I’m proud of myself.
