Jacobs Media 2022 Techsurvey Reveals AM/FM Listening in Cars Is Decreasing: #NABShow
Jacobs Media will publish their Techsurvey 2022 in just a few weeks, and radioinfo wayne stamm caught up Fred Jacob to 2022 NAB Show.
AM/FM radio listening in cars is declining according to the top 31,000 listeners representing the listening habits of 450 stations, and Fred says that while radio professionals may be talking about what’s happening with connected car, they may miss the big picture.
He says, “I think the biggest element in all of this is the idea of who the radio is competing against because so often we think of the other stations on the dial as being our main competitors and maybe we don’t think to digital streaming and podcasts and all the other sounds that have become part of people’s lives.
“So part of Tech Survey’s goal is to help you better connect with your audience and what they’re doing when they’re not listening to you.”
And on the fact that car owners are becoming much more tech savvy about their in-vehicle systems, Fred agrees and says, “Because just a few years ago, complaints were commonplace. I mean, people couldn’t even find the radio in their cars and they didn’t know how to pair their phones.
“But my theory is that as a result of COVID, many mature citizens have kind of figured out how technology works. I mean, they had to figure out how Face Time worked so they could see their grandkids, and they had to figure out how to talk to Alexa so they could get their content and I think the same thing happened in the car.
“And the car companies, I think, have done a better job of simplifying, honestly, how it all works, and ultimately just about anyone can connect their phone in their car.
“But even these fancy systems, I think overall they work better than before. So, yeah, people are finding out.
The new Techsurvey will show a decrease in AM/FM listening in the car and it says, “I think it’s natural. I think it would happen anyway, but I think the onslaught of technology may be accelerating that. But the good news is that radio can always make sure it meets audiences where they are on digital platforms.
Techsurvey 2022 results will be available in a few weeks. Last year’s results are here.
