K-State closes its home against the Air Force

MANHATTAN, Kan. –On an eight-game winning streak and entering its final midweek streak before the conference game, K-State caps a five-game home streak by hosting the Air Force Tuesday and Wednesday at Tointon Family Stadium.
Tuesday’s contest is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start while Wednesday’s final is scheduled for a 4 p.m. first pitch.

The Wildcats and Falcons will meet for the first time since 2014, with K-State holding a 13-3 series advantage. The Cats are 6-0 at home against the AFA and have won the last four meetings overall.

K-State has won eight straight and 10 of its last 11 after its three-game sweep over Morehead State over the weekend. Senior Josh Nicoloffwho homered twice last week with a seventh-inning three-run homer on Sunday, earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors on Monday.

With construction underway of the new Morgan Family Arena, parking for baseball games at Tointon Family Stadium will be affected during the 2022 season.


Fans are advised to park in the west parking lot of Bill Snyder Stadium and do so by entering Gate 3 via College Avenue across from Ascension Via Christi Hospital. Gate 1 and Gate 2 will be closed for the duration of the 2022 baseball season.


When walking to the stadium, fans are directed to exit the west parking lot along the pedestrian path between Gate 1 and Gate 2 and then proceed to the stadium via the sidewalk along College Avenue.

A LOOK AT K-STATE
K-State concludes its five-game homestand with a two-game midweek game against the Air Force on Tuesday and Wednesday at Tointon Family Stadium … The Wildcats have won eight straight games, and 10 of 11, after a three-game sweep Morehead State games … The Cats navigated the first two games of the series, winning 10-2 and 15-2 respectively, before needing a comeback effort on Sunday … Seven different Wildcats homered during the series of the weekend, with three to come in Sunday’s 9-6 win… Josh Nicoloff hit a three-run homer late in the seventh, giving K-State its first lead at 7-5, before Dylan Phillips nailed on a two-point shot in the eighth… Dominique Johnson paced the offense but hit .692 in the series, including six doubles…His performance in three doubles on Saturday tied the program record in a single game, the last in 2009…As a team, K-State has hit .377 over the three games with the Eagles and pushed his season average to .308 – highs in the Big 12 and 30th in the nation… Nicoloff earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honor after cutting .467/ .556 / 1.067 with three doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs during the week … Nicoloff extended his hitting streak to a dozen games … On the mound, the Cats got quality starts from both Blake Adams and Connor McCullough … Adams, who had his fourth straight quality outing, allowed just one earned run in 6 1/3 innings while striking out seven for his second victory … McCullough limited MSU to just one hit in the over the first six innings of his debut, as he finished with a season-high seven frames and eight strikeouts… Hassall Griffin claimed his third victory in as many appearances after pitching the last three innings on Sunday, striking out four.



SCOUTING AIR FORCE
The Air Force makes the trip to Manhattan after losing their last six games and sits 6-12 (1-4 Mountain West)… The AFA were swept by UNLV in Las Vegas in their second conference series… The Falcons allowed 56 runs in their six-game slide (9.3 per game) while scoring 33 (5.5 per game)… Offensively, the Air Force offense hit 19 home runs, including four from both Braydon Altorfer and Jay Thomason… Sam Kulasingam boasts a team-leading .348 average and four doubles… Falcons will look to right-hander Ryan Stohr in Game 1 of the series … Stohr has made five appearances (three starts) and is 0-1 with a 1.88 ERA (3 RE, 14.1 IP).



IN THE SERIES
K-State and Air Force will meet for the first time since 2014, as the Wildcats own a 13-3 advantage in series history… The Wildcats have won the last four of the series and have a record of 6-0 at Tointon Family Stadium against AFA … The Falcons last won in 1998, claiming a 9-8 victory at El Dorado … K-State have won seven of the last 10 meetings in the series … The Cats have a 34-21-1 record against teams in the Mountain West Conference, last against both New Mexico last season.

After a Feb. 1-5, K-State won 10 of 12 games in the month of March and is on an eight-game season-long winning streak after a 9-6 win Sunday over Morehead State… The Wildcat Offense is hitting a clip of .348 during the month and averaging 8.1 per game with 12.5 hits per game… In February, the Cats hit just .223 as a team with 3.5 runs per game on 7.5 hits a contest… Also, K-State is hitting .303 with two outs in March after just .233 in February… Six Cats are hitting north of .350 in March, with three over above the .400 mark … Dominique Johnson has a team-leading .528 batting average while Cole Johnson hits .426… Justin Mitchell is at an even .400 while Josh Nicoloff hit four home runs this month … K-State has 19 homers in this streak up from three last month.

THE DOMINATOR

Dominique Johnsonwho started and started in left field in every game this season for the Wildcats, leads the team in average, on-base percentage, slugging, doubles, extra hits and stolen bases… Oklahoma has recorded multiple hits in each of its last nine games and is the team leader with 13 multi-hit games and five multi-RBI efforts… During its 13-game hitting streak, the second hit .517 (30 for 58) with 11 doubles, two home runs, 12 RBIs and 16 runs scored … He’s been held without a hit in one game this season (0 for 4 at CSU Bakersfield on Feb. 26) … Johnson leads also the team in hitting with runners in scoring position at .647 (11 for 17) and seven two-out RBIs… Currently leading the Big 12 in hits (.468) and doubles (13) while raking second in total hits (46)… Johnson’s 13 doubles rank in t second in the country while its average is fifth.



SERIES DURING WEEKS
Four Wildcats are currently running base streaks of at least seven games, including Dominique Johnson (13), Josh Nicoloff (13) and Justin Mitchell (7) … Nicoloff is also on a 12-game hitting streak … As a team, K-State has hit 10 of its last 11 games, with an eight-game hitting streak from March 4-14.. The Cats don’t have not hit a home run in the first three games of the season at the State Farm College Baseball Showdown in Arlington, Texas … K-State’s eight-game winning streak is the longest such streak under Hughes and program’s longest win streak since winning 12 in a row in 2014 … The eight-game winning streak is tied for the sixth-longest since 1910 and is two short of becoming just the sixth winning streak to two figures in the history of the program.



NICOL-OFF AND THE RACE
Senior infielder Josh Nicoloffa graduate transfer from Columbia, hits .364 in his last 12 games, including six doubles, four homers and 14 RBIs in … Nicoloff hasn’t played in 2021 and has played just eight games after the Ivy League has canceled the past two seasons due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic… The native of Ladera Ranch, Calif., started the season 1 for 21 through the first six games of the season, but hit in all safety in each of his last 12 contests, including three hits and four RBIs, a season-high in Omaha last Tuesday … Nicoloff has four homers in his last nine games and is tied for the lead in the team in the category… Nicoloff was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Monday after going .467/.556/1.067 with three doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs last week.
