The station’s owners, Sports Entertainment Network (SEN), will turn off the signal from 6 p.m., reports radio today.

2CH had been broadcasting across Sydney for 90 years.

SEN management told staff via email on Thursday that it had decided to shut down the music station so the network could focus on sports broadcasting.

A favorite with nostalgics, 2CH was one of Sydney’s first original AM stations to switch to exclusive digital broadcasting on the DAB+ platform.

Its music lineup, which included hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s, was also streamed online.

SEN bought 2CH from EON Broadcasting for $11 million in 2020, and since then 2CH has struggled in the ratings, reaching 66,000 DAB+ listeners in the latest survey.

Meanwhile, SEN’s sports channel wasn’t doing much better, with just 68,000 listeners (AM and DAB+) in the third audience survey this year.

SEN, which started in Victoria as 3AK, bought the 2CH license in order to gain access to a Sydney Underground audience, reports Media week.

SEN has taken a similar step in Queensland. Brisbane’s classic hit station 4QK was recently purchased by SEN and will be rebranded as SENQ from July 1 as a sports station.

2CH began broadcasting on the AM dial in 1932 and over its 90 years has been home to many beloved Sydney radio veterans including Tim Webster and Bob Rodgers.

Rodgers, 95, worked for 2CH as an announcer for 25 years until his retirement in 2020.

Among 2CH’s popular shows were programs dedicated to legendary artists such as Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and the Beatles.
