Winston TDs mark Saints 23-21 win over Jags in preseason – WSB 95.5

NEW ORLEANS – (AP) – Jameis Winston completed 43 and 29 yard touchdown passes for sophomore pro Marquez Callaway, and the New Orleans Saints beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 23-21 in the a preseason game Monday night.

Winston completed nine of 10 passes for 123 yards without interception, bolstering his candidacy to succeed NFL all-time leading passer Drew Brees as the Saints’ new starter.

Winston is competing for the position with Taysom Hill, who went 3-1 as a starter while Brees was injured last season. Hill had 138 yards and a touchdown against Jacksonville.

Both clubs are in the midst of quarterback competitions, providing the game with more intrigue than a typical preseason competition.

No. 1 overall draft pick Trevor Lawrence started against starter Gardner Minshew and played in the first half, 14 for 23 for 113 yards behind an offensive line with three saves – including rookie Walker Little left tackle.

Lawrence led a scoring campaign that ended with a field placement.

His last streak stalled when he was sacked for a 9-yard loss by Jalen Dalton on 25 Saints. The drive ended when Josh Lambo missed a 43-yard field goal attempt on the upright.

Hill played the majority of the first half and third quarter, completing 11 of 20 assists. His first two series ended with sacks from Jihad Ward and Dawuane Smoot. His first goal scored culminated with former Jaguars kicker Aldrick Rosas scoring a 52-yard field goal late in the second quarter, widening the Saints’ lead to 17-3.

Hill’s touchdown went for 14 yards to Lil’Jordan Humphrey to make it 23-3.

Minshew played most of the second half, completing 13 of 21 passes for 149 yards before his night was out when he was intercepted by linebacker Wynton McManis while throwing his back foot in a scramble on the second and the goal of 2.

CJ Beathard had the Jags’ best QB night statistically, passing 3-yard touchdowns to Jeff Cotton and 24-yard touchdowns to Collin Johnson in the final six minutes.

Callaway surprised the crowd when he saw the reruns of his touchdowns. He caught the first – his longer of the two – with a dip between two defenders after being hampered from behind by rookie Tyson Campbell.

His second touchdown came from a one-handed grip over his outside shoulder along the sideline.

Callaway, who played 11 regular season games with three starts as an undrafted rookie from Tennessee in 2020, beat seasoned veteran Shaquill Griffin on both scores. Griffin, formerly of Seattle, was among the Jaguars’ biggest free agency acquisitions, signing a three-year contract worth up to $ 40 million.

The Superdome was not kind to Lawrence. He’s played there three times since his days at Clemson and lost each time, starting with the 2019 national title game against LSU, followed by a 2020 semi-final loss to Ohio State.

Jaguars: Running back Travis Etienne left with an apparent foot injury. Those not in uniform due to injuries were wide receiver DJ Chark (finger), cornerback Tre Herndon (knee), edge rusher Josh Allen (COVID-19), center Brandon Linder (knee) and goaltender Andrew Norwell (elbow).

Saints: Second-year tight end Adam Trautman, a scheduled starter this season, was taken to the locker room in the first half with an apparent lower-body injury that the club did not reveal. Reserve defensive back Bryce Thompson limped off the field in the fourth quarter.

Jaguars: Complete the preseason Sunday in Dallas.

Saints: Complete their home preseason roster on Saturday night against Arizona.
