Governor Phil Scott announced that the federal government Inflation Reduction Act will help mitigate rising health care costs for many Vermonters, especially those on Medicare who purchase health plans in the Vermont Health Insurance Marketplace. The law is expected to be signed into federal law by the president this week. Starting in 2025, Vermonters who receive Medicare — including most Vermont seniors over the age of 65 — will pay no more than $2,000 a year for prescription drugs. From 2023, they will pay no more than $35 a month for insulin, a drug used to treat diabetes.

The Community College of Vermont and the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation are expanding a program to provide Vermonters with a debt-free college degree. The 802 Opportunity Grant provides free tuition to Vermonters with a household income of $75,000 or less who do not already have a bachelor’s degree. The scholarship is available for new or returning students of any age.

The Vermont Republican Party will not commit any resources to the winner of the United States House primary. Liam Madden is a solar developer and anti-war advocate who has presented himself as a freelancer. He beat out Ericka Redic and Anya Tynio for the GOP nomination. Some Republicans are frustrated that Madden accepted the nomination when he said he would not, and Madden said if elected he would not caucus with Republicans in Congress. Over the weekend, the party met in Montpellier where they were able to ask him questions about his platform. The Vermont GOP passed a resolution saying it would not support Madden in the November election.

The Vermont National Guard is hosting a tour of its training facility on Thursday. The tour operates from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Ethan Allen Range. It will include an overview of what the Guard does, a tour of ranges and training locations, and a conversation with people who specialize in range operations. The Guard says the location in Jericho provided training opportunities not available in any other New England state, including the mountaineering school.
